Working primarily in watercolour, acrylic and mixed media, Tony Smibert’s art reflects three great traditions: the Golden Age of British Watercolour (1750-1850), Zen minimalism and Abstract Expressionism.

His mastery of historic watercolour is seen in his unique standing as a Visiting Artist Researcher at Tate Gallery, the home of British Art, while the minimal landscapes reflect a very similar credibility in Japan - where he remains one of few western artists ever invited to create a signature range of high fashion yuzen kimonos.

The most recent acrylics have few visual precedents – aside from Abstract Expressionism- but arise from a different source, which is the ongoing study of Aikido that informs his capacity to work with energy and freedom on a very large scale and his interest in the Taoist art of China.

Visitors are always welcome to visit the studio gallery. Just outside of Deloraine in northern Tasmania it enjoys beautiful views over the World Heritage listed Great Western Tiers and is the perfect place to view framed and unframed works in the environment that inspired them.

Smibert Studio is also home to one of the world’s finest private collections of historic artist materials and a display of latest research into the painting techniques of JMW Turner.
