Kooparoona Niara is the Palawa (local aboriginal) name for the Great Western Tiers and means ‘Mountains of the Spirits’.
The Mole Creek Stories project was a volunteer project undertaken in 2017 which captured authentic stories from the Mole Creek Community in four short films. The films were produced by six participants of the Tasmanian Leaders Program; David Pyefinch (Madfinch Creative Video Production), Susan McLeod, Prue Horne, Stuart Loone, Chris Griffin and Theresa Hay. Centrally located in the north of Tasmania, Meander Valley's skyline is dominated by the majestic rugged escarpment of the Great Western Tiers. The Aboriginal people have always known this ever-changing backdrop as Kooparoona Niara, meaning "Mountains of the Spirits". The region forms part of the UNESCO approved Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.
